DEATH WEEKEND (1976)
The 1980s is often held up as the golden decade of horror. The slasher subgenre was in full swing, practical effects were reaching new heights and the rapid growth of the video rental market allowed indie filmmakers to bypass the studio system, at least to some extent. The result was a wave of diverse, inventive and gloriously campy horror films. Franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and The Evil Dead were born, and culturally, it feels like we've been a

FATHER OF THE DIED
EVIL DEAD BURN (18) Director: Sebatsien Vanicek Screenplay: Sebatsien Vanicek, Florent Bernard, Sam Raimi Starring: Souheila Yacoub, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan Running time: 110 minutes Cinema Review: David Stephens Is there a more consistent horror franchise than “Evil Dead”? SILENT MADNESS
By 1984, slasher mania was probably at its absolute peak. The success of Halloween and the ever-growing Friday the 13th series meant we were drowning in low-budget tales of teenagers being picked off by some masked (or unmasked) psychopath. Sure, the quality control wasn’t exactly stellar. Not everything in ’84 could be A Nightmare on Elm Street, but there was still plenty of scrappy B-movie fun to be had.
