Apparently the giant spider isn't going to be making a return in the new movie. Good news or a slap in the fact to the source material?

Totally. Good to hear they are also omitting the weird under-age sex scene too.

I'll say this and back it up too: if they have the balls to put Maturin on the big screen, I will actively campaign for its Best Picture nomination.

Haha! A starfish!
The thing is, the book goes into more detail about what/who IT is and I don't think it's really necessary for a screen adaptation. The book also goes on about a giant turtle god called Maturin - something that if was realised on screen, would seem absolutely ludicrous. Saying all that, it's still probably one of the best books we've ever read.

It's an absolute slap in the fact, since the fact is that the book had a giant spider.
BUT. In all seriousness...
Fuck that spider. All of that wonderful build up in a nearly perfect book, and It's a FUCKING SPIDER?? Now, admittedly, the book describes it as being like a spider, the implication being that it's a totally alien being, but still: It's a fucking giant spider. And that's dumb.
So yes, it's good news. Now, what will they replace it with? That's a far more pressing issue. The old draft of the remake's script describes a "starfish-like" creature (see below, potential spoilers), and while that could be cool and Lovecraftian, it could also look like something out of a Justice League cartoon.
I guess what I'm saying is: good news, maybe, but possibly bad. I am of no use here.
