Hulu has officially staked its upcoming revival, 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale', choosing not to move forward with the highly anticipated series.
The news was confirmed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was set to return as a recurring mentor and executive producer. In an emotional Instagram post, Gellar expressed her disappointment, ending months of speculation regarding the project’s status.
The pilot, filmed in August 2025 under the direction of Chloé Zhao (Hamnet), apparently struggled to find the right tone. Despite a script from Poker Face writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, sources suggest the high-concept cinematic approach didn't align with the streamer’s vision for the franchise.
The story was set to follow a new Slayer, Nova (played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong), as she navigated a modern-day Hellmouth.
While this specific iteration is dead, there is some hope that the franchise may not be gone for good.
Insiders indicate that Hulu remains "high on the Buffy IP" and is considering a 'creative reset' rather than a total abandonment of the show.
For the time being however, the "New Sunnydale" chapter is closed...
