Netflix has pulled the plug on supernatural mystery series The Boroughs just one month after its debut. A bit of a shame this, as the first season was pretty decent.
The eight-episode series, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), premiered on May 21.
Set in a seemingly idyllic retirement community in the New Mexico desert, The Boroughs followed a group of unlikely senior heroes who discover an otherworldly threat determined to steal the one thing they have left to value: time. The series featured an impressive ensemble cast including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, Jena Malone, and Carlos Miranda, among many others.
The show also boasted a strong creative team behind the camera. Ben Taylor (Sex Education) directed the opening episodes, while Augustine Frizzell (Euphoria) and Kyle Patrick Alvarez (The Stanford Prison Experiment) handled additional installments.
Despite never reaching the popularity of Stranger Things, The Boroughs remained in Netflix’s Top 10 rankings throughout its short run. However, its reported cancellation is being linked to the show’s costly sci-fi production budget and the upcoming departure of executive producers The Duffer Brothers from Netflix. The duo are set to move to Paramount, where they will develop an untitled event film slated for release in 2028.
