Following the record-breaking success (and underwhelming reviews) of Scream 7, franchise creator Kevin Williamson has confirmed he does not intend to return to the director’s chair for a potential eighth installment. Williamson, who penned the original 1996 classic and recently made his franchise directorial debut with the seventh film, shared his decision during a recent interview with Hello Sidney.
"I think for the next Scream I'll probably step back and just be a part of the family again," Williamson said.
He explained his desire to focus on other writing and television projects that have been sidelined during the production of the latest sequel. Despite his departure, Williamson remains optimistic about the series' future, saying he is "anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it".
While Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group have not yet officially greenlit Scream 8, an announcement seems inevitable. Scream 7 has already grossed over $150 million globally, achieving the franchise’s biggest opening weekend to date.
Williamson teased that series lead Neve Campbell has already shared a "great idea" for the next chapter.
